The EIKEN® Grade 1 Test

Exploring the Sections and Challenges of Japan’s Premier English Language Assessment

The EIKEN® test consists of multiple grades, and Grade 1 is the highest level. The Grade 1 EIKEN test is comprehensive and challenging, assessing the test taker’s advanced English language proficiency. It consists of the four main sections.

1. Reading Comprehension

In this section, test takers are presented with a variety of complex written texts, such as fill in the blanks sentences, essays, articles, and reports. They are required to read and comprehend these texts carefully. The questions may test their understanding of the main ideas, details, inferences, and vocabulary in context.

2. Listening Comprehension

In the listening section, test takers are exposed to a series of audio clips, which may include lectures, interviews, discussions, and presentations. They need to listen attentively and answer questions related to the content of the recordings.

3. Writing

The writing section of the EIKEN® Grade 1 test evaluates the test taker’s ability to articulate ideas clearly and coherently in written form. Test takers are typically required to write essays or reports on complex topics, demonstrating their analytical and organisational skills.

4. Speaking

The speaking section assesses the test taker’s ability to communicate fluently and effectively in spoken English. Test takers are engaged in various tasks, such as giving presentations, discussing topics, and responding to questions. This section evaluates their pronunciation, grammar usage, vocabulary, and overall oral communication skills.

The EIKEN® Grade 1 test is known for its rigour and demands a high level of proficiency in English. It is often taken by individuals who wish to demonstrate their advanced language abilities for academic or professional purposes, or by those planning to pursue international opportunities that require superior English language skills.
